Yesterday I took my boyfriend ice skating, because I love it and he didn’t really know how.
And we met a man who had a stroke, was in a comma, and was just really sick. His name is Jimmy, and he’s a hockey player. He got out of the hospital on Tuesday, and just five days later he was back at the rink, hoping to reteach himself how to skate. He’s had to learn how to do basically everything again.
He first approached us by asking me to tie his skates, because since he still had issues with one of his arms he couldn’t get them tight enough by himself. After I did he told me I was a very pretty girl, and I made his heart beat. I almost cried it made me so happy.
Then when the woman he was with returned, he got onto the ice. Now, he fell twice and was only able to get down half of the rink, but the fact that he was out there trying was just so inspiring. We helped him up and off the ice, he was really frustrated with himself, and it was clear that he wasn’t ready yet. But more than that, it was obvious that he was never going to give up.
Once a hockey player, always a hockey player.
